Merwin's Butterflies

remembering to slow down

Morning!

We are on our way out the door, road trip to Tennessee to Murder By Death’s cave show so here’s a wee one. “One of the Butterflies” is a poem I read to myself maybe once a week. It reminds me to slow down, to practice being present, to enjoy the pleasures that are in front of me instead of being in my head all the time.

I’m not saying I’m adept at this.

It’s sort of like when you read a book, love it, and promptly forget what it’s about. It’s a gift, really, to get to read it again and again and rediscover why you love it every time.

This is a tenuous link, admittedly. But I do love that one of my great gifts is forgetting what my favorite books are about.

The poem also exemplifies what I’m thinking with jars of light—trying to capture what can’t be kept.

What Is Jar of Light?

Jar of light is simple. I record a poem I like (generally not my own) for you every morning. You can visit this page whenever you want OR if you would like to hear me read a poem daily, with minimal friendly banter and questionable sound quality, go ahead and opt in! You can do that by toggling Jar of Light on in your notification settings here: your.substack.com/account.

Crow + the Poet is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
